New Platforms and New Business Models
for Care-at-a-Distance
Telemedicine has traditionally been used to provide care to remote areas. But new technologies are becoming available for care-at-a-distance, including those that provide immersive experiences, do not require technical expertise, allow for simultaneous transmission of sophisticated telemetric data, and permit one-to-many or many-to-many unscheduled connections. Use of these technologies enables new business models, including retail care, extending virtual catchment areas, employee health clinics, and others. As we pursue implementation of these technologies, we must understand their role in the context of a variety of technologies that can be used to extend care. In addition, we must look towards appropriate evaluation techniques. Models for evaluation should depend on the problem the implementers are trying to solve, but ideally we can utilize a common framework for evaluation. Such standardization of frameworks has been proposed in the past, but we must determine their suitability for newer technologies and business models.
Danny Sands is senior medical informatics director for Cisco, where he provides both internal and external health IT leadership and helps key customers with business and clinical transformation using IT. His prior position was chief medical officer for Zix Corporation, a leader in secure e-mail and e-prescribing, and before that he spent 13 years at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he developed and implemented numerous systems to improve clinical care delivery and patient engagement.
He has earned degrees from Brown University, Ohio State University, Harvard School of Public Health, and trained at Boston City Hospital and Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Sands currently holds an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School and maintains a primary care practice in which he makes extensive use of health IT.
Sands is the recipient of numerous health IT awards, has been elected to fellowship in both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Medical Informatics, and is a founder and board member of the Society for Participatory Medicine. In 2009 he was recognized by HealthLeaders Magazine as one of “20 People Who Make Healthcare Better.”

A Journalist Trying To Explain to Ordinary People
What They Fundamentally Don't Understand
About Electronic Health Records:
Why They Aren't Here Already for Care-at-a-Distance
This presentation will discuss the variety of approaches I have taken to give people a sense of why the implementation of EHRs has been so tortured and slow in coming. These include coming up with a convincing metaphor to capture the complexity of the changeover, trying to have readers send emails to the creators of TV shows, such as the House, to put on an episode where the virtues and the problems with EHRs are seen dramatically, and a suggestion that a class action law suit allowing patients get absolute free access to their records whenever they want. These examples might help us make some sense of this.
Stephen Strauss is one of Canada’s premier science writers and columnists with over 29 years dedicated to his field. He has served as Editor of the Montreal Star, feature writer, science writer, columnist and editorial writer for The Globe and Mail, science columnist for CBC.ca and has freelanced several pieces such as for Air Canada’s EnRoute Magazine, The Globe and Mail, The Times Higher Education Supplement, The New Scientist, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, The Canadian Institute of Advanced Research, the Toronto Star, Reader’s Digest and Nature Biotechnology. Strauss was Honorary Fellow at Bethune College, York University and was a contributing writer to MIT’s Technology Review Magazine.
He has also authored three books, several book chapters, and for his efforts received numerous awards. In 2009, he was one of 11 Canadian journalists to receive a tier-1 award in the first-ever Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Journalism Awards competition. J. Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO, Branham Group Inc.
The State of eHealth in Canada - Can We "Own the Podium"?
Health care is under the proverbial microscope these days, but health care is focusing a lot of attention on an important target. That target could (and will) transform the current healthcare industry. That target is eHealth. eHealth or Healthcare ICT is a component of the panacea for what ails the healthcare sector: escalating costs, inefficiencies and, arguably, casualties due to ineffective communication of patient and other information. What is the state of eHealth in Canada today? What have been the major successes and failures? Are we on the right track? What, if any, adjustments do we need to make? Or do we need to implement a major overhaul strategically and/or tactically? Building on the success of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, does Canada have what it takes to "Own the Podium" both in terms of using eHealth effectively and also emerging as the global leader in eHealth. J. Wayne Gudbranson will provide a detailed perspective on this critical subject based on his surveys and analysis of eHealth data.
J. Wayne Gudbranson is President & CEO of Branham Group Inc. (www.branhamgroup.com), an independent global industry analyst and strategic marketing consulting firm focused on assisting Information and Communications Technology (ICT) companies achieve market success. Today, the Branham300 is the most comprehensive database of privately held and publicly traded ICT companies ranked on total revenues (www.branham300.com) in Canada. The Branham300 and Outsourcing Directory are key components of Branham’s Data Products division.
